Fashion Infused by Art’s Recent News Roundup

My primary focus for this blog is to highlight fashions inspired in some way by artwork. A forum discussing how designers use various artistic movements, mediums, genres and themes to inspire designs, runway collections, ad campaigns, editorials and various other fashion-minded forms from Baroque to Street Art, Sculpture to Photography. I’d like to Shine a light on the artistic influences not only seen in designer interpretation/recreation, but the translations back to the original artists’ visions. And, a basis for exhibiting how designers are constantly pushing the boundaries of fashion through fiercely motivated designs.

Check out some of the most recent articles I’ve found in art-infused fashion news…

“Gucci Looks to Its Eclectic PF19 Campaign for Latest ArtWall Series”

The Gucci ArtWall series continues with the PF19 campaign (via HYPEBEAST)

Personally, I can’t get enough of Gucci’s ArtWall series! The latest murals for the PF19 Campaign are no exception, and have been plastered on buildings around the world, including New York, Hong Kong, Milan and more, in celebration of creatives such as Serbian performance artist Marina Abramović and Spanish artist Ignasi Monreal through colorful larger-than-life works. Meanwhile, the brand also ventured to 7th century B.C. Sicilian ruins for its PF19 imagery, capturing its elaborate, 70’s-inspired collection amid historic Ancient Greek temples in Sicily.

“Couture AW19: Iris van Herpen ‘Hypnosis’”

Kinetic textiles revealed at Iris van Herpen Autumn/Winter 2019 Haute Couture show (via Fashion United)

Highlighted on the catwalk of Paris Haute Couture week, Iris van Herpen, in my opinion, attained a new level of miraculously unconventional designs (as if that was possible) with her ‘Hipnosis’ collection. Recruiting the artistic geniuses of American kinetic sculptor Anthony Howe, van Herpen integrated this vastly imaginative art form within her collection… fusing one of the art world’s utmost time-honored traditions with cutting-edge technology, scientific engineering, and (of course) couture. Kinetic-boom!

“Zaid Zawaidah transforms influencers into paintings by Picasso”

Newfound art inspiration takes form with this mixed media illustration by Zaid Zawaidah (via Collater.al)

Inspired by the genius cubist-surrealist-expressionist-post-impressionist-etc. works of Pablo Picasso and Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Dubai-based artist Zaid Zawaidah’s, employs simple brushstrokes and primary colors with mixed media illustrations to totally alter fashion and beauty images of Instagram influencers. A totally novel idea that I now wonder why it hasn’t yet been done!

“Pierre Cardin’s ‘Future Fashion’ exhibition to open at the Brooklyn Museum”

“Pierre Cardin: Future Fashion” will run at the Brooklyn Museum from July 20th through January 5th. (via George Chinsee/WWD)

“Kinetic” sculpture dresses and “Space Age” fashions may be all the rage walking runways today, but Pierre Cardin did it first (like the Computer Coat, 1980; or the Pierre Martian look)! The Brooklyn Museum’s retrospective: “Pierre Cardin: Future Fashion,” explores the heights of his 70-year career, but what the installation exhibition (fashion, snapshots, videos, accessories, furniture and industrial design, set amid photographic-Pop-Art-esque backdrops) relentlessly highlights, is the unparalleled forward thinking of high fashion’s finest couturier/architect/artist.

“Inside the mesmeric mind of Ignasi Monreal, the artist behind Gucci’s SS18 ‘Hallucination'”

Art history meets Gucci with the SS18 ‘Hallucination’ campaign by Ignasi Monreal (via designboom)

We’ve seen the recent eccentricities of the SS18 Gucci campaign, ‘Hallucination’ (a daring hybrid of hyperrealist-meets-surreal art), that brought prominent art history works back to life; the ever-inspirational ArtWall murals, and other art stories/works for Gucci, created from Ignasi Monreal’s unconventional imagination. As recently nominated for THE DESIGN PRIZE 2019, check out this can’t-miss interview where designboom peeks inside the brain behind it all! And oh, what a mind it is!
