Let’s get conventional, conventional!
Attention fellow-fashion-forerunners: take a nod from these style notes that will put a spring in more than just your step! The good news is that much of the accessory trends for the season may already be lining your closet shelves. You know, that box way in the back? Get in on the action and start your quest for these minor (yet mighty) outfit additions.
As the shouts for final curtain calls rang out on the catwalks of New York, London, Milan, and Paris, ending a spectacular Spring/Summer 2020 season, one mood stood among the mode… functionality vs. futility. As Steff Yotka for Vogue Runway specifies the message: “We need to be smarter about our stuff.”
That’s right… the days of throwaway, one-time-use fashions are legitimately a thing of the past! The main focus on the accessory front for Spring can be summed up with one word: timeless… we’re talking “no-frills, functional items that can live in our wardrobes for seasons to come,” Yotka reports. Suzy Menkes highlights Nicolas Ghesquière’s show notes at Louis Vuitton (NTM a design house that has long lived off of iconic accessories), which defined “circling back to the pleasures of sartorial protocol” in her article “#SuzyPFW: Louis Vuitton and MiuMiu – Skillful Recycling” for Vogue Britain.
So, what does this mean for Spring fashion? It’s time to reimagine your chic sartorial smashes from the past with the future. The accessories that ruled the runways were structured, simple, chic, and endlessly versatile. Yotka describes:
“Bags will be oversized or bucket-shaped, all the better to tote our possessions, or stripped down to their parts like the lighter and lipstick cases from Celine and Gucci. Shoes must be walkable, like Erdem’s and Sacai’s easygoing flatforms, or based on essentials, like prepster loafers and Mary Jane pumps…
Even a few flightier trends emerged; [i.e.] the scads of boutonnières and Rive Gauche headscarves. The fact that all these trends can coexist alongside rainbow sunglasses and an unstoppable straw bag renaissance highlights Spring 2020’s other important message: When it comes to accessorizing, you do you. Buying, wearing, and repeating what you love is a good way to keep your closet sustainable and yourself in style.”
